Exploratory Modeling: Search Through Spaces of Computational Experiments.

Abstract: The paradigm of exploratory modeling involves the use of series of computational experiments to analyze complex and uncertain problems. In this paper the authors describe a prototype environment that automates the exploratory modeling process. The exploratory modeling environment provides a powerful platform for applying evolutionary programming to a wide range of problems of practical importance, from modeling time series to discovering policy options with desirable characteristics. Conversely, the paradigm of exploratory modeling suggests a variety of interesting issues regarding the application of evolutionary programming to problems of this kind.
